Abstract

Traffic accidents continue to represent a significant transportation safety challenge in Rejang Lebong Regency, particularly along the Curup–Lubuk Linggau and Curup–Kepahiang corridors, where mountainous terrain, sharp curves, steep gradients, and high traffic intensity increase operational risks. This study aims to analyze the characteristics, contributing factors, and spatial distribution of traffic accidents in Rejang Lebong Regency and to identify accident-prone locations for road safety improvement. A quantitative descriptive approach integrated with spatial and statistical analysis was employed using documented accident records, roadway information, and Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping. The results indicate that motorcycles are the most frequently involved vehicles, while accidents are predominantly concentrated on national arterial roads with high traffic exposure. Human factors, including excessive speed, unsafe overtaking, lack of concentration, and non-compliance with traffic regulations, were identified as the primary contributors, followed by roadway geometry, vehicle conditions, and environmental influences. Black spot identification using the Equivalent Accident Number (EAN) and Upper Control Limit (UCL) methods successfully identified several high-risk road segments requiring priority engineering interventions. The findings suggest that integrating spatial analysis with engineering assessment provides a reliable framework for supporting evidence-based transportation safety management. Practical recommendations include improving road safety facilities, strengthening traffic law enforcement and public education, and implementing continuous monitoring of accident-prone locations to reduce accident frequency and severity.
