Abstract

Post-Anesthetic Shivering (PAS) remains a relevant complication after spinal anesthesia and may be influenced by patient and procedural characteristics. This study aimed to determine the relationship between age and duration of surgery and PAS among patients undergoing spinal anesthesia at the Central Surgical Unit of Dr. H. Soewondo Regional General Hospital, Kendal. A quantitative observational-analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 104 patients selected through total sampling. Age data were obtained from medical records, whereas surgical duration and PAS severity were assessed through observation. Spearman rank correlation was used for bivariate analysis. Most participants were in the early and late elderly groups, each comprising 23.1% of the sample, and 55.8% underwent surgery lasting more than 60 minutes. Grade 1 PAS was the most frequent outcome, occurring in 32.7% of patients. Age was significantly associated with PAS severity (r = 0.561, p < 0.001), while surgical duration showed a stronger positive association (r = 0.766, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that increasing age and longer surgical duration are associated with higher PAS severity following spinal anesthesia during recovery.
