Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis commonly experience uremic pruritus, which may be influenced by dialysis adequacy and technical parameters such as blood flow rate (QB) and Urea Reduction Ratio (URR). Objective: This study analyzed the relationships between QB, URR, and uremic pruritus among patients undergoing hemodialysis at Harapan Anda University Hospital in Tegal. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional correlational design was applied to 52 respondents selected through purposive sampling. QB was obtained from hemodialysis machine records, URR was calculated from pre- and post-dialysis blood urea values, and pruritus was assessed using the 5-D Itch Scale. Results: Moderate QB was observed in 69.2% of respondents, while 69.2% had adequate URR. Moderate pruritus was the most frequent category (53.8%). QB was significantly and inversely associated with pruritus severity (r = -0.493; p < .001), as was URR (r = -0.517; p < .001). Conclusion: Better blood flow and dialysis adequacy were associated with lower uremic pruritus severity, supporting routine optimization of hemodialysis parameters alongside systematic symptom assessment. These findings emphasize integrated dialysis monitoring to improve treatment effectiveness, comfort, and patient-centered outcomes.
