Abstract

This cross sectional ecological investigation quantifies the relationship between population level physical inactivity and adult obesity prevalence across 142 sovereign nations using standardized surveillance metrics from international platforms. Employing multivariable linear regression and spatial econometric specifications, the analysis accounts for national economic development, urban population density, and demographic age structures. Findings demonstrate a robust positive correlation between physical inactivity and country level obesity rates, wherein each ten percent increment in national physical inactivity corresponds to a three point two percentage point increase in obesity prevalence. Spatial autoregressive parameters confirm significant geographic clustering, while macro level infrastructure indicators underscore urban walkability and active transit networks as primary upstream determinants of physical movement. The interaction of physical inactivity with nutritional transitions and screen engagement further accelerates adiposity trajectories across pediatric and adult cohorts. These empirical observations emphasize that population movement deficits are fundamentally driven by structural environmental configurations rather than isolated lifestyle choices. Reversing the global non communicable disease burden requires coordinated multi sectoral policy frameworks that integrate active urban design, accessible recreational infrastructure, and standardized epidemiological surveillance across international health jurisdictions.
